DIY or Call a Plumber?

A good DIY plumbing project is limited, accessible, and easy to shut down if something goes wrong. Replacing an aerator, clearing a simple trap, changing a toilet flapper, or installing a compatible fixture can be reasonable when you understand the steps, have the proper tools, and can test the work before closing up the area.

Before starting, ask whether you can identify the pipe material and fitting type, isolate the water at a reliable valve, and reach every connection without forcing old parts. Read the installation instructions first, measure before purchasing, and make sure you have a clear plan for what happens if a fitting leaks. If the job requires guesswork, special tools, or a workaround for incompatible parts, pause before proceeding.

Call a plumber for active or hidden leaks, sewer odors or backups, water-heater work, gas piping, major drain clogs, low pressure affecting multiple fixtures, repairs inside walls or ceilings, and any work that may require permits or code knowledge. Those situations can involve safety hazards, property damage, or system-wide problems that are not visible at the fixture.

Stopping is a good decision, not a failure. Shut off water immediately if a repair begins to leak, a valve will not close, a fitting is damaged, or you cannot confirm a secure connection. Take clear photos of the problem and note the fixture, symptoms, and any parts you installed. That information helps a plumber diagnose the issue efficiently and helps protect your home from a small problem becoming a larger repair.
